….

Why should I choose Hackers Guide to Drum Recording?

Hackers Guide to Drum Recording is a first of its kind educational product that was developed specifically for drum setup, recording and mixing.  We interviewed and hired several working industry professionals and Recording Arts instructors who specialize in drum recording to show you how it’s done. The material is fast-paced but easy to learn, and many of the recording techniques are demonstrated on film.

Do I need a large budget to get professional quality recordings?

No! We will show you how to get the maximum output of your studio for very small budgets. There is a section in the bonus drum recording video that shows you how to record a drum kit with varying numbers of inputs and microphones so that you can still get a good drum sound even if you don’t have a lot of gear available to you.

How much should I expect to spend on building my home studio?

Recording studio budgets can vary from a couple of hundred dollars to over a million.  The difference between them is modern computer recording technology, and today the gap between sound quality of both the types of studios is almost non-existent.

The only real difference is the knowledge of the engineers using the equipment, and we aim to give that to you.  We will show you how to get the maximum output of your studio for any budget. We’ll help you figure out what kind of studio gear you need to accomplish your recording goals, and how to meet those goals with the budget you have to work with.

Can you get industry quality recordings in a home studio?

Most definitely YES! Advances in recording technology, and recording software have allowed for anyone to have a home production studio with no more than a laptop running inexpensive recording software. Many of today’s top selling recording artist use no more than a microphone, audio interface, and a laptop, to record and share theirs ideas with other members of the band.

Why is it better to record at home than in a commercial studio?

Studio rental fees, accompanied with the labour of a trained engineer costs a premium. Your songs and ideas need to be finalized and well-rehearsed to fit concisely into the pre-paid studio time, or you can end up wasting your money on an unfinished product.  At home, you pay for your own gear, but you get to use it forever .

In most recording studios, once the sound, genre, and feel of an artist’s music have been established, the engineer will select and use a small combination of the same gear over and over again for that artist, despite the studio’s plethora of selection.  This selection of gear, although specific, is much less of a cost than the entire recording arsenal of most recording studios.

If you are able to define the kind of music and sound you want to get, then purchasing or renting a few of the right pieces of gear, and learning how to use it yourself can be a far better financial and time-saving decision than spending the same amount of money on a rented block of time in a commercial studio that you only get to use once.

Then why do we still need commercial recording studios?

Today’s commercial studios survive by being diverse and flexible in their ability to record any instrument, genre, and audio source out there. They invest in large acoustically designed spaces with all the gear and equipment they could ever need for any recording application.

However, most of the time the large space and expensive equipment in a recording studio is used for drum recording.  So in many cases, if you eliminate the need for the drum recording space, you eliminate the need for the expensive studio.  Today, there is less and less need for the the commercial recording studio as people move towards drum sampling and home recording.

How does your product compare to other products on the market?

Hackers Guide to Drum Recording was not created by one studio engineer. It is a collaborative effort by many recording engineers, producers, acoustics technicians, and professional audio engineering instructors. It doesn’t assume that you already work in a commercial studio, or that you have the money to put one together immediately. It takes a scalable look at recording and shows you what your options are for each step of the way.

Unlike most recording tutorials out there, we don’t use one person that has a general knowledge of recording.  We use several people with very specific skill sets and proven track records to show you how to record the drums and nothing else.  Drums are a big category so we wanted to get just the specialists.

What level of use is this product good for?

Novice to Advanced recording musicians and engineers. You could always just pick up a book about recording, but we believe it’s best to see the recording techniques in action and watch some conduct demonstrations. We don’t want anyone to be left out because we didn’t take the time to put ourselves in our customers’ shoes. It’s easy to learn, but you’ll learn a lot.

Do you offer updates and new content?

There are two things about the recording industry that need to be remembered:

1. it changes constantly.  2. everyone does something a little differently from the next person.  For a limited time, we are offering a one-year subscription to downloadable audio and video interviews with recording engineers and producers from around the world as a bonus with your purchase of the Hackers Guide to Drum Recording ebook.  We want you to be up-to-date on the newest and best recording techniques out there.
